Eight Belles came second behind Big Brown, the horses death put a huge dark cloud over the day, and over one of Americas biggest sporting events. This year saw the biggest crowd since 1974, with over 157,000 people watching the race.
Eight Belles jockey, Gabriel Saez said "After we passed the wire, I stood up,'' Saez said in a statement. "She started galloping funny and I tried to pull her up, but she went down"
